TLC attorney Brooke Robinson joins Good Things Utah to discuss how financial barriers keep survivors in abusive relationships and highlights the free legal resources, protective order options, and safety planning support available through Timpangos Legal Center.
Timpanogos Legal Center says one of the biggest reasons people stay in relationships with domestic violence are for financial issues. Attorney Brooke Robinson says there are resources to help. First, get to a safe location. If needed, call a victim advocate/shelter first, UDVC linkline, have a safety plan, then when you’re ready for legal advice, you can reach out. Brooke says sometimes a protective order is necessary. A police report is not always necessary but it can help.
It is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and Pro Bono Month, and Timpanogos Legal Center relies on volunteers, law students, training attorneys on how to handle DV issues. Victims can reach out and consultations can be free of charge. Brooke says they can guide you to certain resources in the Utah court system, self help center, MyPaperwork, legal clinics and referrals.
